The Gateways of India: Mountain Passes

Terminology: In the Tibetan language, "La" means Pass.
So, saying "Nathu La Pass" is technically incorrect (it means Nathu Pass Pass).
These narrow gaps in the mountain ranges have been strategic trade routes (Silk Route) and invasion paths for centuries.

For SSC CGL and UPSC, you need to memorize Location (State) and Connection (What does it link?).

Imagine you are driving from Kashmir to the North-East. Here are the major signposts you will see.

• Rohtang Pass (Himachal): Connects Kullu Valley with Lahaul & Spiti. The Atal Tunnel (World's longest highway tunnel above 10,000ft) is built here.
• Lipulekh (Uttarakhand): Connects Uttarakhand to Tibet. Used for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
• Bom Di La (Arunachal): Connects Arunachal to Lhasa (Tibet).
• Palghat / Palakkad Gap (Kerala): A break in the Western Ghats. Connects Coimbatore (TN) to Kerala.
